What is Aerial Yoga?

In an aerial yoga class, you perform the same poses you do on a yoga mat, except you use a silk hammock that's suspended from the ceiling as a prop to support you through the various flows. The purpose of the hammock is to help you improve flexibility and build strength, while allowing you to do more challenging poses without added pressure on your shoulders, spine, or head.

Deep Savasana and meditative practices in your hammock add a benefit to your practice because of the way gravity interacts with your body. Our unique hammock system allows you to combine your yoga practice with the benefits of a float experience as you defy gravity, and melt into the horizon of your mind. Aerial Yoga is the fun way to access the pure joy and excitement that floating in your hammock provides.

In Aerial yoga, the hammock is kept close to the ground, generally less than a meter from the floor. It becomes a swing which can support the hips in both forward and back bends. For many people, yoga postures that are difficult on the ground can be performed more easily and with less strain on the body in mid-air.

Is is suggested that in addition to the emotional, physical and spiritual benefits of all yoga practice, Aerial yoga has particular benefits for strengthening and stretching the whole body, decompressing the spine, improving circulation, boosting digestion and lifting one's mood. In particular, Aerial yoga strengthens the core as well as the arms and legs, to support the body in mid-air.

Although Aerial yoga can be performed by people with all levels of fitness, it is not recommended for pregnant women or those who suffer from vertigo, due to the flips and inversions practiced during the class.

Do I need experience in AIReal Yoga or working with a hammock?

No, we welcome all levels of expertise, and even specialize in newcomers and beginners. The hammock may seem daunting, but it is actually a tool for greater support and assistance in your practice. The beauty of our method is that whether you are a beginner or a 20 year practitioner, AIReal Yoga can be tailored to fit your specific needs.

Inspired Fitness offers group Aerial Yoga classes (limited to 7 clients)

Thursday 4:20 PM, Friday 5:30 PM, and Sunday 11:15 AM. 

Private sessions are available upon request.  Instructors are all certified and experienced AiReal (™) Yoga Instructors. Rebecca Kirschner, Heather Scoggins, and Claire Chaplais.
